MediaTek's first public 5G test prototype equipped with M70 baseband

At the "IC60 Special Exhibition for the 60th Anniversary of Integrated Circuits" held in Taiwan recently, MediaTek publicly released its own 5G test prototype last time. There is a good improvement in heat control.

It is reported that MediaTek has invested in 5G research and development for 5 years, and is committed to turning complex 5G technology into fingertip-sized chips. The 5G prototype is exhibited in this exhibition, which is a staged result of the previous generation of chips.

MediaTek’s 5G prototype is not a single device, but a multi-device combination product system, because the development of 5G technology involves a series of technological breakthroughs from the transmitter to the terminal.

According to previously announced information, Helio M70 supports 5G NR new air interface, conforms to 3GPP Release 15 independent networking specifications, and has a download rate of up to 5Gbps. It will supply 5G chips for smartphones in 2019. .

MediaTek did not give a detailed introduction to the technical specifications of this prototype, but said that the prototype used for development engineering testing was displayed this time to facilitate engineers to experience the feasibility of new 5G technologies, correct possible communication errors, and test design circuits. Whether the speed target value can be achieved, so the two "skylights" on the back of the phone are used to connect with the test platform.

MediaTek also pointed out that because 5G transmission speed is much faster than 4G, a lot of heat will be generated during circuit operation, so multiple fans are used on the prototype to cool down, but the final 5G commercial equipment will have MediaTek’s unique low-power design. fan.

MediaTek stated that it has invested thousands of people in 5G-related research and development in the past five years, participated in 5G standard formulation and decision-making, and successively obtained a number of 5G core technology patents, keeping pace with other major chip design manufacturers.

At the MWC 2018 conference in February this year, MediaTek also signed a "5G Terminal Pioneer Program" memorandum of cooperation with Huawei, Nokia, China Mobile, NTT Docomo and many other partners to promote the commercialization of 5G in 2020.

Xie Qingjiang, vice chairman of MediaTek, said that in the future, 5G will not only increase the speed of mobile Internet by 10 times, it will also have a breakthrough impact on technologies in various fields such as cloud computing, car networking and intelligent networking.

At present, various manufacturers have launched their own 5G basebands, including Qualcomm Snapdragon X50, Intel XMM 8060, Huawei Barong 5000, MediaTek Helio M70, Samsung Exynos Modem 5100, and mass production machines based on 5G communications will also be officially launched in 2019. .
